Disposable Cotton Pads - Why We Hate Them!

We can all make a difference to reduce waste and our beauty routines can be a great place to start. One of the easiest steps we can take to reduce some of that waste is swapping the single-use cotton pads for our Reusable Nail Polish Remover Pads!

The little, white, single-use cotton pads might look clean and simple, but when it comes to the environment, they REALLY aren’t.

‘Can they really be THAT bad? Cotton’s a plant after all’

Before we start, let’s make one thing clear: 100% Organic Cotton is a renewable source that we LOVE!
But the majority of the cheap, disposable pads are not made from the same, lovely organic cotton. This non-organic cotton, much like with any other large scale farming, uses a huge amount of resources, most of which have a shocking impact on the environment.

Water

Mass farming in general uses huge amounts of water, and this kind of cotton is no different. It takes 20,000 litres of water to produce just 1kg of cotton - that’s 133 bathtubs of water, to make just 15-20 packs of single use cotton pads!

Chemicals

Now, that’s a lot of water! But it’s not just water.
To ensure the massive crop yield to keep up with supply for disposable cotton products, huge amounts of chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides are used. These chemicals and pesticides don’t just deal with the pests that they’re intended for, they make their way into our ecosystems, into the soil, rivers and oceans, damaging them from the ground up - literally! These chemicals can also cause serious health problems for the workers within these farms.

‘But if cotton’s a plant, aren’t these pads biodegradable?’

Just because you could pop them in the ground, doesn’t mean you should!
These chemicals that have been used in the farming, processing and bleaching of the cotton may well remain in the cotton pad so yep, you guessed it, as the pad biodegrades, those bleaches and chemicals make their way into the soil.

Now, imagine going through ALL of that to make a cotton pad that you’ll use once, then throw away.

Sounds pretty awful, doesn’t it?

We thought so too, so we’ve created our Reusable Nail Polish Remover Pads to help reduce this waste. We’ve even done a bit of maths to prove it!

One of our Reusable Nail Polish Remover Pads will last for a year but could last longer still! Say you changed your nail polish once a week, and used four single-use cotton pads: you’d use 208 pads.

So with just one Reusable Nail Polish Pad, you’re replacing 208 single-use pads that would go into landfill.
A pack of 5 will replace 1040 single-use pads!

What are our Reusable Nail Polish Remover Pads made from?

Our Reusable Nail Polish Remove Pads are made from 100% Bamboo Rayon Felt. This felt is super soft and durable meaning it will withstand both nail polish and nail polish removers and when you’re finally finished with one, they’re plant-based and biodegradable!

How to care for them?

These pads could last for years if you look after them and they're super easy to take care of! To keep them clean just rinse whilst still wet (this is important!), leave to dry then reuse. Some staining may stay on cloth from your nail polish - this is totally normal and will not affect its use.
Make sure not to leave the used pads on delicate surfaces and please do not flush these!
