What is Plastic Free July?

'Be part of the solution to plastic pollution'

Tabitha Eve

July might just be my favourite month because it's all about plastic free!

From a small initiative that began in 2011, Plastic Free July has grown into an enormous, worldwide movement that encourages people to ditch single-use and go plastic free for the whole month. Millions of people now sign up and pledge to this challenge worldwide with the goal of reducing their own plastic waste.

According to their official website:

  • An estimated 326 million participants in 177 countries now take part!

  • They contribute to a total saving of 940 million kg of plastic waste each year

  • 8.5 out of 10 people who take part in Plastic Free July made changes that have become new habits moving forwards.

How can I get involved?

Come along and join millions of others this July and take part in Plastic Free July! Plastic Free July have some wonderful resources on their website (find them here!) and we thought we'd share some of our own tips and products that we think could help you this Plastic Free July

Biodegradable Bath Pouf

Tabitha Eve Zero-Waste Eco-Friendly Plastic-Free Organic Cotton Biodegradable Bath Pouf

Another simple bathroom swap is choosing a Biodegradable Bath Pouf over one made from plastic netting.

Our bath poufs are made from 100% GOTS cotton, are lightweight with a beautiful lather and sumptuously soft feel. We recommend hanging to dry after each use and when your bath pouf needs a clean, wash on cool and hang to dry. When they finally need replacing, they are 100% Biodegradable.

None Sponges

Tabitha Eve Eco-Friendly Zero-Waste Plastic-Free Handmade Reusable Vegan Kitchen None Sponge

A little kitchen swap that can make a big difference is going from a disposable, plastic washing-up sponge to one of our Kitchen None Sponges. Our Kitchen None Sponges are biodegradable, compostable, plant-based and plastic-free! They have a brand new design with a compressed, plant-based cellulose core which expands when wet into a soft, squishy sponge. The durable, netting layer works like a scouring pad to tackle even the most stubborn washing up.

They are fast drying, more hygienic than your average plastic sponges, plant-based and can be composted when you're finally done with them!

Reusable Menstrual Pads

Tabitha Eve Eco-Friendly Zero-Waste Plastic-Free Handmade Vegan Reusable Menstrual Sanitary Pad

For those of us who have periods, its worth having a think about more sustainable options. Disposable tampons and menstrual pads often contain multiple kinds of plastic and when we think about how many of them we use then throw away each month, each year and throughout our lives, it really adds up! Not to mention, investing in reusable menstrual products often saves you money too.

Our Reusable Menstrual Pads are made from cotton and bamboo, with a new design featuring softer, more comfortable cotton outer and better fitting wings to improve wearability.

Shopping with Refills

Tabitha Eve Plastic Free July Refill

One of the most sustainable to shop is by using refills. It's one of the most fun ways to shop, too! Zero-waste refill shops have been popping up all over in recent years and they provide an excellent way to shop for some of your food, beauty and cleaning products without buying excess plastic packaging. Perhaps do some research to see if there's one near you, or if a local health food shop offer some refill options, and go and check them out. It can be a little daunting at first but grab any containers you have lying around, pop in, ask how it all works and have a go!
